I just arrived from my first experience as a teacher in front of young children at primary school. Even though I had a wonderful time I have mixed feelings regarding my performance.
I would like to start by adressing that pupils and I started on the right foot. They were incredibly welcoming and respectful. We started by singing the "hello" song they´re used to, and then I proceeded to check whether pupils were absent. After that, I asked one of the classmates to recognise the day of the week as well as the weather, like they always do.
Afterwards, I gave them my badges so they culd write their names, and proceeded to write the activity they were going to do. I didn´t want to hurry them up, because they´re children, though I should´ve, since I lost some precious time which they could´ve used to solve another activity.
I introduced them to the vocabulary regarding the parts of the house and later, solved the listen and point activity from their books. I also wanted to do the read and match activity I had planned but we didn´t have enough time.
I noticed that I used too much spanish, cause I felt they couldn´t follow me, which I improved with the next course. When I entered the classroom we did the same activities until the bell rang and it was time for us to say goodbye. My use of the english language to give instructions and clarifications improved, but I know there´s a long way to become the kind of professional I want to be.
Overall, it was an enriching experience. Students and I connected, which is one of the most important things for me. To create a respectful environment in which children can develop. I can´t wait to go back to the classroom so as to continue improving.
